Secondary links ## Optional

An assistant may skip these: blog, archive, careers.

  • Add a name: it's the only required field.
  • Add a summary: the model reads it right after the name.
  • Add at least one link to a key page.

What is llms.txt

llms.txt is a Markdown file at the site root (example.com/llms.txt) with a short description of the site and links to its key pages for language models. Jeremy Howard of Answer.AI proposed the format in September 2024; the spec lives at llmstxt.org. HTML pages are full of menus and scripts, while llms.txt gives a model just the substance.

What goes into the file

Only an H1 with the name is required. Then, in order: a blockquote (>) with a summary, free-form details, and H2 sections with links written as [name](url): note. The Optional section holds secondary links an assistant can skip; the generator always puts it last.

# Project name

> A sentence or two about what it is.

Details: who it's for, what sets it apart.

Does llms.txt help with AI search?

No major search engine has confirmed it uses llms.txt for ranking. It is read by assistants and agents that open a site on a user's behalf, and by developer tools. We add it as a cheap extra next to a robots.txt open to AI search, schema.org markup and copy that answers in the first paragraph.

How to publish it

The file should open at https://your-domain/llms.txt with a 200 status, as plain UTF-8 text. In Next.js, Vite or Astro, put it in public/; on WordPress, upload it to the site root over FTP or with a plugin. If your content changes often, generate the file at build time, as brusnica.dev does.

Common questions

At the root of the domain: https://example.com/llms.txt. Assistants won't find it in a subfolder.

robots.txt tells crawlers what they may visit, and sitemap.xml lists the pages. llms.txt describes the site for a language model: what it is and which pages matter.

It isn't in the spec: it's the site's full text in one file. A company site only needs llms.txt; the full version suits large knowledge bases and API docs.

Yes. The spec recommends Markdown versions of pages when you have them, but regular pages work too.

Nowhere. The file is built right in your browser; nothing is sent to our server.
